The Great British Lovejoys Bark Off is Here!

Pupcakes:

  • 2 ripe bananas (150g mashed)
  • 125g peanut butter (Xylitol free)
  • 80ml honey
  • 2 eggs
  • 190g plain or wholemeal flour
  • 2.5 tsp baking powder
  • 60ml vegetable/canola/peanut/olive oil
  • 180ml water

Frosting:

  • 500g potatoes, peeled and cut into 2cm pieces
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 120g plain, low-fat yoghurt (unsweetened) or sour cream
  • 2-4 tbsp water
  • 12 small dog bone biscuits (optional)

Pupcake Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan). Line a 12-hole muffin tin with cupcake cases.
  2. Mash the bananas in a bowl until smooth.
  3. Add the peanut butter, honey, and eggs, whisking until smooth.
  4. Stir in the flour, baking powder, oil, and water.
  5. Divide the mixture evenly between the cases, filling them about ¾ full.
  6. Bake for 22 minutes or until golden and a skewer inserted comes out clean.
  7. -Allow to cool on a wire rack for 30 minutes before adding the frosting.

Frosting Method:

  1. Place the potatoes in a large pot of water and bring to a boil. Cook for 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are very soft and beginning to crumble at the edges.
  2. Drain the potatoes and return them to the empty pot. Add the yogurt, honey and water, starting with 2 tablespoons. Using an electric mixer, mix on a medium speed for 1 minute, then increase to a high speed for another minute or until the mixture is smooth and creamy. If necessary, add more water to achieve a soft consistency similar to frosting.
  3. Transfer the mixture to a piping bag fitted with a 1.5 cm. Pipe the mixture onto the cupcakes and finish with a dog biscuit.

Recipe Notes:

Peanut butter – make sure the peanut butter you choose doesn’t contain Xylitol, an artificial sweetener that's harmful to dogs. It’s best to avoid sugar-free or low-sugar varieties as well.

Flour – For optimal nutritional benefits, wholemeal flour is recommended due to its higher fibre and nutrient content. However, white flour can still be used if preferred. If your pup is unable to tolerate wheat, we suggest almond flour as an excellent alternative. Almond flour is rich in protein and fibre, and it also provides essential nutrients such as vitamin E, calcium, and iron.

Piping – you can use a standard star-shaped nozzle, but if you don’t have a piping set, simply use a teaspoon to dollop the frosting on top of your pupcakes.

Storage – these pupcakes have kept well for up to a week, though they’ve never lasted longer. Store them in an airtight container in the fridge to keep the potato fresh. The biscuits may soften, but your pup will still love them!
