Pet Fire Safety for Summer BBQs

Summer is here, bringing with it the delicious aroma of barbecues and long evenings spent with family and friends. For many of us, our pets are part of the family, and they love to join in the fun. However, the combination of sizzling food, open flames, and excited pets can pose some real risks.

At Lovejoys Pet Food, we believe a safe pet is a happy pet. To help you enjoy a worry-free summer, we've put together this ultimate guide to pet fire safety and BBQ season. Let's make sure your furry friends stay safe and sound.

A Safe Space for Your Pet

The excitement of a BBQ, with new smells and people, can be overwhelming for some pets. It's best to create a safe, calm space for them away from the main action.

  • Designated "Chill Zone": Set up a quiet corner indoors or in a shady part of the garden with their bed, some water, and a favourite toy. This gives them a place to retreat if they get too anxious or over-excited.
  • Secure the Area: If your dog tends to be a bit of a Houdini, make sure your garden is secure. Check for any gaps in fences and consider keeping them on a lead to prevent them from darting towards the grill or out of the gate.

Grilling and Fire Safety

The BBQ itself is the biggest hazard. Hot grills, coals, and fire can cause serious burns to an inquisitive nose or paw.

  • Keep Paws Away: Never leave the grill unattended. A curious pet could easily knock it over or get too close. Place a barrier around the BBQ or keep pets on a lead when it's in use.
  • Hot Coals and Ash: After you've finished grilling, hot coals can remain a danger for hours. Cover the grill or move it to a secure place where pets can't access it. Even cool-looking ash can hold enough heat to burn a paw pad.
  • Flammable Liquids: Keep lighter fluid and matches well out of your pet's reach. Accidental ingestion or play could lead to severe consequences.

Food and Drink Hazards

Barbecue food is often rich and fatty, which can be very tempting but dangerous for your dog's digestive system.

  • No Scraps: Resist the temptation to share scraps from the BBQ. Fatty foods like sausages, burgers, and ribs can cause pancreatitis, a painful and potentially life-threatening condition in dogs.
  • Cooked Bones are a Big No: Cooked bones can splinter and cause choking or serious internal injuries. Always dispose of them securely in a bin that your pet can't get into.
  • Marinades and Sauces: Many marinades contain ingredients toxic to dogs, such as onions, garlic, and xylitol. Keep these items away from your pet.
  • Alcohol is Toxic: Never give your pet alcohol. It is highly toxic and can cause serious illness, even in small amounts.

What to Do in an Emergency

Even with the best precautions, accidents can happen. It’s important to know what to do if your pet gets a burn or ingests something they shouldn't.

  • Treating Burns: If your pet suffers a minor burn, cool the area with cold water or a wet cloth. Do not apply ice. Call your vet for advice immediately.
  • Ingestion: If you suspect your pet has eaten something harmful, contact your vet straight away. Don't wait for symptoms to appear. The sooner you seek help, the better the outcome.

By being mindful of these dangers, you can ensure that your summer celebrations are full of fun, not fear. We at Lovejoys Pet Food wish you and your canine companion a safe and happy BBQ season!
