Safe Summer Fun with Your Canine Companion

As the days get longer and the sun shines brighter, it's the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors with your furry best friend. Summer offers so many opportunities for fun and adventure. But with warmer temperatures, it's crucial to put your dog's safety first.

At Lovejoys Pet Food, we want to help you make the most of the season while keeping your dog happy and healthy. Here are our top tips for safe summer activities with your canine companion.

Beat the Heat: Timing and Location are Key

The midday sun can be a real danger for dogs. They can't cool down as easily as we can, making them vulnerable to heatstroke. It's vital to adjust your routine.

  • Walk at Cooler Times: Swap your midday walk for a stroll early in the morning or late in the evening. The air is cooler, and the pavement isn't scorching hot.
  • Check the Pavement: A simple test can save your dog's paws. Place the back of your hand on the tarmac for seven seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's definitely too hot for their paws!
  • Seek Out Shade: When you are out and about, look for routes with plenty of shade, such as woodland paths or trails. This protects your dog from direct sunlight.

Splish, Splash, and Cool Down

Water is a fantastic way to help your dog cool off. Many dogs love a good paddle or swim, but always prioritise safety.

  • Paddling Pool Fun: A shallow paddling pool in the garden is a great option. It allows your dog to splash around and cool their paws, which helps them regulate their body temperature.
  • Supervised Swimming: If you're near a dog-friendly beach, lake, or river, a swim can be wonderful exercise. Always keep a close eye on your dog. Not all dogs are strong swimmers, so consider a doggy life jacket. Be mindful of currents and blue-green algae, which can be harmful.
  • Hydration is Vital: Whether you're at the beach or a park, always bring fresh water for your dog. A portable water bottle and a travel bowl are essential to keep your dog hydrated.

Fun and Games for the Summer Season

When it's just too hot for a long walk, you can still keep your dog mentally stimulated and entertained.

  • Indoor Activities: Brain games are perfect for a hot day. Try hiding their favourite Lovejoys treats around the house for a treasure hunt. Puzzle feeders are also brilliant for keeping their minds busy without the risk of overheating.
  • Frozen Treats: Homemade frozen dog treats are a delicious way to cool them down. You can freeze some of their wet food in a Kong or make your own dog-friendly ice lollies. Remember to use ingredients that are safe for dogs.
  • Agility at Home: If your dog loves to play, a simple, homemade agility course in the garden during cooler hours can be a lot of fun. Use household items like chairs or cardboard boxes to create a small obstacle course.

Listen to Your Dog

Your dog will often show you when they are getting too warm. Look out for signs of heatstroke. These include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and a very red tongue. If you see these signs, act quickly. Move your dog to a cool, shady spot and give them small sips of water. If their condition doesn't improve, contact your vet immediately.

At Lovejoys, we believe a happy dog is a healthy dog. By following these simple tips, you can ensure your canine companion has a safe and enjoyable summer filled with adventure and fun.
